AVS, SHARKS SWAP FOUR

The Colorado Avalanche acquired winger Matt Nieto and defenseman Ryan Merkley from the San Jose Sharks for winger Martin Kaut and defenseman/winger Jacob MacDonald.

What does it give the Colorado Avalanche
Nieto spent time with the Avalanche in the past, so he knows the environment he is returning to. He adds more defensive acumen to Colorado's forward group. Meanwhile, Merkley is a one-way, offensive defenseman with issues in his own end. His arrival could set up more trade activity for the Avs, since they clearly have a surplus in terms of offensive D-men (and a need for more help at the center position).

What does it give the San Jose Sharks
The key player for the Sharks in this trade is Kaut, who has little left to prove at all levels outside of the National Hockey League. He should receive a legitimate shot at establishing himself in the big league with the Sharks down the stretch. As for MacDonald, who has played both defense and wing with Colorado this season, he is merely a depth option for the rebuilding Sharks at this time.

Fantasy impact
Keeper leaguers may take a speculative chance on either Kaut or Merkley (or even both), since they should be joining better situations for career advancement after this trade. Nieto and MacDonald have little fantasy value, so they can remain on the waiver/free agent wire in most league formats.
