SENS SEND ZAITSEV TO CHICAGO
The Chicago Blackhawks acquired defenseman Nikita Zaitsev, a second-round draft pick in 2023 and a fourth-round draft pick in 2026 from the Ottawa Senators for future considerations.
What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
The rebuilding Blackhawks were able to take on Zaitsev's contract ($4.5 million cap hit through 2023-24) because they have plenty of salary cap space. They were able to get two draft picks in this deal, including a second-rounder in the upcoming 2023 NHL Draft.
What does it give the Ottawa Senators
The Senators need room in their budget to re-sign winger Alex DeBrincat (who was traded from Chicago to Ottawa last off-season, ironically enough). Moving Zaitsev for the cost of two draft picks helps them get a little closer to an extension with DeBrincat.
Fantasy impact
There is no fantasy impact here, as Zaitsev will likely be used sparingly by Chicago. The only impact here will be felt if DeBrincat re-signs with Ottawa or not this summer.
