BONINO BROUGHT BACK BY PITTSBURGH
In a three-team trade, the Pittsburgh Penguins acquired forward Nick Bonino from the San Jose Sharks; San Jose acquired a seventh-round draft pick in 2023 and a conditional fifth-round draft pick in 2024 from the Penguins, and defenseman Arvid Henrikson from the Montreal Canadiens; and Montreal acquired a fifth-round draft pick in 2024 and defenseman Tony Sund from the Sharks.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins like familiarity, and are basically the same team year in and year out. Teddy Blueger was sent to Vegas for cap purposes, so a new fourth-line center was needed. Bonino is likely to play that role, although his familiarity with Mike Sullivan's system could elevate him.
What does it give the San Jose Sharks
The Sharks are sellers, so dumping Bonino makes obvious sense here. They are getting a couple of draft picks from Pittsburgh and Henrikson, a mammoth defenseman who is finishing his NCAA career at Lake Superior State. San Jose has until August 15 to sign him.
What does it give the
The Canadiens are getting a fifth-round draft pick in 2024 from the Sharks to retain 5-0 percent of Bonino's salary for the rest of this season. They also get Sund, a veteran Swedish defenseman currently playing in the SHL. He is unlikely to be part of Montreal's plans.
