SEVERSON SENT TO COLUMBUS
The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired defenseman Damon Severson from the New Jersey Devils for a third-round draft pick in 2023 (No. 80 overall).
What does it give the Columbus Blue Jackets
In Severson, the Blue Jackets continue to revamp a blueline that really struggled in 2022-23. He joins fellow newcomer Ivan Provorov and Zach Werenski (who is returning from injury) to form the core of the new defense. Columbus now has a blueline surplus.
What does it give the New Jersey Devils
The Devils knew they were going to likely move on from Severson, so they put his rights up for sale and ended up with the 80th overall selection in this year's draft. Not bad at all. Rookies Simon Nemec and Luke Hughes are probably the beneficiaries of this trade.
Fantasy impact
Severson and Werenski are the likely point men on the Blue Jackets' power play units, so whomever gets the top gig should have more fantasy value. That said, Severson should be selected in many drafts this year. He is an intriguing late-round option.
