RYAN JOHANSEN TO COLORADO

The Colorado Avalanche acquired center Ryan Johansen from the Nashville Predators for forward Alex Galchenyuk.

What does it give the Colorado Avalanche
In Johansen, the Avalanche add a true second-line center and playmaker to slot behind superstar Nathan MacKinnon. Colorado is getting him at a reduced cap hit ($4 million), but also with a declining game. He is going to be counted on to put up better numbers in Denver.

What does it give the Nashville Predators
The Predators clearly wanted Johansen off the team, since they decided to retain 50 percent of his cap hit ($4 million) through 2024-25! Furthermore, Nashville is not getting anything in return (unless they decide to re-sign Galchenyuk). This move is very interesting.

Fantasy impact
Johansen's fantasy value should improve mightily after moving from Nashville to Colorado, especially if he is utilized on the first power-play unit. That said, the Avalanche will likely bring in more talent this off-season. As for Galchenyuk, he is likely to play in either the AHL or Europe in 2023-24. Pass.
