COLTON GOES TO COLORADO
The Colorado Avalanche acquired forward Ross Colton from the Tampa Bay Lightning for a second-round draft pick in 2023 (No. 37 overall).
What does it give the Colorado Avalanche
For the Avalanche, Colton will essentially replace Alex Newhook, who ironically was sent to Montreal for two draft picks (including the No. 37 pick that is going to Tampa Bay here). Colton does not have Newhook's scoring upside, but he is a grittier and more versatile player. He should fit in well with the Avalanche because of his great speed.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Lightning
The Lightning do not have enough cap space to bring back their restricted free agents and improve the roster, so something had to give. Colton becomes this year's sacrificial lamb, but not without a decent return. Tampa Bay did not have a pick until the sixth round in this year's draft before this trade, so this should help in the long run.
Fantasy impact
Colton may see an increase in ice time with his new team, depending on whether or not he fits in seamlessly with Colorado. He projects as a 2023-24 sleeper.
