MANGIAPANE MOVED TO WASHINGTON
The Washington Capitals acquired winger Andrew Mangiapane from the Calgary Flames for a second-round draft pick in 2025.
What does it give the Washington Capitals
The Capitals have been busy reshaping their forward group so far this off-season. First, they brought in Pierre-Luc Dubois to play center, and now Mangiapane as a scoring winger. With Nicklas Backstrom essentially retired, and T.J. Oshie unsure about continuing his NHL career, change is in the air in D.C. Mangiapane can play either wing position and on pretty much any line. He has one season left on his contract.
What does it give the Calgary Flames
Calgary has had issues re-signing talent in recent years, so they decided to get ahead of the situation with Mangiapane. The latter had productive years with the Flames, but struggled a bit last season. The Flames are going to try to remain competitive in 2024-25, but they also need to incorporate more youth into the lineup. This move gives them options: they can give prospects more of a chance up front, or be active on the UFA market.
Fantasy impact
Mangiapane is due for a rebound campaign anyway, although his career-high 35 goals and 55 points (2021-22) might have been an outlier. If he plays with Alex Ovechkin in '24-25, his numbers may go up. That said, he is a solid point producer who may have already reached his ceiling.
