CHRIS TANEV TRADED TO TORONTO
The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired defenseman Chris Tanev from the Dallas Stars for winger Max Ellis and a seventh-round draft pick in 2026.
What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto's management has long had heart eyes for Tanev. The last free-agent deal Tanev received was from Brad Treliving when he was general manager of the Flames. With this deal, it increases the chances of Treliving signing Tanev once again. Tanev is highly sought after for his warrior mentality and defensive presence, so making this trade allows the Leafs to negotiate with him prior to the opening of free agency. If they do come to an agreement, the question becomes whether his new contract will make sense heading into his age 35 season.
What does it give the Dallas Stars
The Stars were desperately trying to get Tanev's signature on a new contract. This deal signifies that the gap was too wide to bridge. Instead of losing him for nothing, the Stars decided to recoup a few minor assets. Max Ellis is an undersized skilled winger who has played in the AHL the last two seasons. He will likely land in the AHL on the Stars depth chart, as well. The seventh-round pick has slim odds of hitting. However, with the Stars' recent draft history, you just never know. Dallas must now get to work to try to replace what Tanev brought to the team.
Fantasy impact
If Tanev does sign in Toronto, he will not offer much fantasy value but his goaltenders will surely be glad he is playing in front of them.
