BERNIER TO VANCOUVER

The Vancouver Canucks acquired winger Steve Bernier from the Buffalo Sabres for a third-round draft pick in 2009 and a second-round draft pick in 2010.

What does it give the Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks were shut out of the free-agent frenzy (so far), so needed to find offense from another source. Enter Bernier, who is a strapping winger with some upside. The 23-year-old could be the ideal fit for Vancouver's top line next to the Sedin twins, since the Swedes like to play the cycle game down low.

What does it give the Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres had a few too many NHL-caliber wingers, so they decided to move Bernier--who had been acquired at last season's deadline from San Jose in the Brian Campbell deal. Perhaps Buffalo could have used a veteran defensive defensemen, instead of two high draft picks, but they did receive good value for Bernier.
