MacARTHUR MOVES TO THRASHERS
The Atlanta Thrashers acquired winger Clarke MacArthur from the Buffalo Sabres for a third-round draft pick in 2010 and a fourth-round draft pick in 2010.
What does it give the Atlanta Thrashers
Atlanta is barely on the playoff bubble but they still have a chance to sneak into the postseason. To do that they obviously need more scoring talent up front (especially with Ilya Kovalchuk gone), and while MacArthur is no star he remains a player who still has some unrealized potential. Atlanta may have overpaid here a little for an underachieving forward, but they appear intent on making a playoff push.
What does it give the Buffalo Sabres
With Raffi Torres now in the fold (due to an earlier swap with Columbus) MacArthur became expendable. His defensive deficiencies this season may have been the biggest rationale for moving him, and the Sabres get two solid picks here (while also dropping some payroll to make room for Torres). It all adds up to an impressive move by Buffalo.
