CANUCKS BRING IN BRANNSTROM
The Vancouver Canucks acquired defenseman Erik Brannstrom from the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Tucker Poolman and a fourth-round draft pick in 2025.
What does it give the Vancouver Canucks
This trade provides the Canucks with depth on defense, and some cap relief. Brannstrom is unlikely to be in the opening night lineup, as Vancouver placed him on waivers following the trade. Still, the 25-year-old was a full-time NHLer the past two seasons and could step into a bottom-four role if called upon. As well, trading Poolman's contract (20% retained) helps Vancouver manage its cap situation ahead of the season.
What does it give the Colorado Avalanche
After signing in Colorado this off-season, Brannstrom appeared to get surpassed on their depth chart by other defenders. The Avalanche may have planned to waive him anyway, so they did well to acquire a draft pick for him, after also taking on most of Poolman's contract. Poolman has not played since the 2022-23 season and will be spending another year on Long Term Injured Reserve. Poolman's career might be over.
Fantasy impact
A former first-round pick, Brannstrom is just battling for an NHL job at this point. When he is in the lineup, he has little upside in fantasy leagues. That is unlikely to change after this trade. Poolman was never much of a fantasy contributor, and his playing days may be over unfortunately due to injuries.
