RED WINGS, BLACKHAWKS SWAP THREE
The Detroit Red Wings acquired goaltender Petr Mrazek and winger Craig Smith from the Chicago Blackhawks for forward Joe Veleno.
What does it give the Detroit Red Wings
The Wings know Mrazek, who was originally a Detroit draft pick. They are also familiar with going with a three-goalie system, which is what Mrazek's addition may result in. He has a chance to grab the net ahead of veterans Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon if he finds his game (Mrazek has struggled this season). Smith is a dependable veteran role player who should help Detroit's fourth line.
What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
For the Blackhawks, dealing Mrazek cleared up a major logjam between the pipes after the recent acquisition of Spencer Knight from Florida. It will be Knight and Arvid Soderblom in goal for the Blackhawks down the stretch, plus they should get back veteran Laurent Brossoit (injured) back healthy next season. In Veleno, the 'hawks land a versatile forward who is a natural center with two-way ability.
Fantasy impact
Mrazek is still in a three-goalie system, even after the trade. Therefore, he is not a recommendable pickup option down the stretch for many league formats. Veleno could get a better opportunity in Chicago, so keep an eye on him. Smith does not have much in the way of fantasy value.
