LYDMAN TO BUFFALO

The Buffalo Sabres acquired defenseman Toni Lydman from the Calgary Flames for a third-round draft pick in 2006.

What does it give the Buffalo Sabres
In Lydman, the Sabres acquired the top-four rearguard they desperately needed to compete in the tough Northeast Division. Lydman may get the opportunity to play alongside fellow Finn Teppo Numminen with the Sabres, and he should see loads of ice time on special teams. Lydman is exactly what Buffalo needed.

What does it give the Calgary Flames
Following the arrival of Roman Hamrlik, the writing was on the wall for Calgary to deal a blueliner. Therefore, adding a decent future asset (third rounder) is a nice return, considering the fact Lydman's spot in the lineup should now fall to promising rookie Dion Phaneuf. Nevertheless, Lydman's stabilizing presence will be missed.
