HABS TAB TANGUAY

The Montreal Canadiens acquired winger Alex Tanguay and a fifth-round draft pick in 2008 from the Calgary Flames for a first-round draft pick in 2008 and a second-round draft pick in 2009.

What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens have been looking to acquire Tanguay for some time now, so he was clearly on the radar. That said, his best asset (playmaking winger with offensive instincts) is something the Habs already have in large supply. He will take the top-six winger spot vacated by unrestricted free agent Michael Ryder, and could wind up playing alongside captain Saku Koivu. They may have given up a little too much in terms of future assets, especially considering Tanguay's inflated salary.

What does it give the Calgary Flames
The Flames did very well to shed Tanguay's contract, plus add a solid first-round pick in OHLer Greg Nemisz at No. 25 where the Habs were previously slotted. Furthermore, the Flames essentially replaced Tanguay with Mike Cammalleri in another deal, so this move was a win-win situation for GM Darryl Sutter.
