RANGERS ADD ERIXON

The New York Rangers acquired defenseman Tim Erixon and a fifth-round draft pick in 2011 from the Calgary Flames for center Roman Horak and two second-round draft picks in 2011.

What does it give the New York Rangers
The Rangers add a local boy, since Erixon was born during his father Jan Erixon's playing days with the Rangers. He's a good all-around defense prospect who should compete for a roster spot with the Blueshirts come September. The Rangers obviously were more impressed with Erixon's upside than Calgary was. Adding a fifth rounder in the deal makes up for the loss of center prospect Horak.

What does it give the Calgary Flames
The Flames were trying to sign Erixon to an entry-level contract before the June 1 deadline, but came up short. Instead of losing him to the draft again, they dealt him for two second rounders in this year's draft, and took a flyer on center prospect Horak. It's a bit of a setback for the Flames, since Erixon was their top prospect and 2009 first rounder, but at least they got some value back.
