McCARTHY TO VANCOUVER

The Vancouver Canucks acquired defenseman Steve McCarthy from the Chicago Blackhawks for a third-round draft pick in 2007.

What does it give the Vancouver Canucks
After trading Brent Sopel to the Islanders, and with Marek Malik gone to the Rangers via free agency, the Canucks were a little thin along the blueline. Enter McCarthy, who should provide solid play as a third-pairing blueliner in Vancouver. He should also see some time on the power play, but isn't expected to make an impact.

What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
With defense prospects Anton Babchuk and Brent Seabrook ready to step into the lineup, and several other prospects on the way (including Cam Barker), the Blackhawks had no room for McCarthy. Therefore, they added a solid asset in an extra third rounder. McCarthy never played to expectations in Chicago, and was starting to dip further down the depth chart.
