BABCHUK FOR RICHMOND

The Carolina Hurricanes acquired defenseman Anton Babchuk and a fourth-round draft pick in 2007 from the Chicago Blackhawks for defenseman Danny Richmond and a fourth-round draft pick in 2006.

What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes
Both Richmond and Babchuk were stuck behind a deep defense corps, so little has changed with this swap. Babchuk, a right-handed shot, may get to play in Carolina regularly in 2006-07--since right defensemen Aaron Ward and Andrew Hutchinson (as well as lefties) Frantisek Kaberle, Niclas Wallin and Glen Wesley are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents this summer.

What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
Babchuk was deemed expendable this season because of the acquisition of Adrian Aucoin and emergence of rookie Brent Seabrook. Richmond still has plenty of obstacles in the Windy City in order to crack the NHL lineup. That said, he's a better fit for the 'Hawks than Russian Babchuk.
