SPACEK TO EDMONTON

The Edmonton Oilers acquired defenseman Jaroslav Spacek from the Chicago Blackhawks for winger Tony Salmelainen.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
After acquiring Dick Tarnstrom, the Oilers continued their shopping spree of defensemen by landing Spacek. The Czech veteran is more well-rounded than Tarnstrom, and will be used in all game situations by coach Craig MacTavish. Spacek is also signed beyond 2005-06, so he'll be an Oiler for the foreseeable future. The Oilers now have an excess along the blueline, so look for more deals.

What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
Salmelainen is currently toiling with HIFK Helsinki in the Finnish SM-Liiga, and has been among the league's leading scorers all season. His outstanding offensive skills didn't translate to NHL success in Edmonton, but he should get another chance in Chicago. Salmelainen will probably sign with the 'Hawks over the summer and contend for a roster spot next September. He could be an ideal linemate for fellow Finn Tuomo Ruutu.
