DOWD SHIPPED TO COLORADO

The Colorado Avalanche acquired center Jim Dowd from the Chicago Blackhawks for a fourth-round draft pick in 2006.

What does it give the Colorado Avalanche
Dowd adds another veteran defensive specialist to the Colorado lineup, as well as a right-handed face-off man. In that regard, he's better than Dan Hinote or Ian Laperriere in the circle, which could be invaluable come playoff time. Dowd has also played with several members of the Avalanche, including Andrew Brunette and Antti Laaksonen in Minnesota and Patrice Brisebois and Jose Theodore in Montreal, so chemistry was an issue in making this deal.

What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks get very good value for a fourth-line center. The fourth-round pick is another sign that Chicago GM Dale Tallon is stockpiling for the future. For now, Curtis Brown can return to the center position and take over the checking duties from Dowd.
