CALDER-HANDZUS SWAP

The Philadelphia Flyers acquired winger Kyle Calder from the Chicago Blackhawks for center Michal Handzus.

What does it give the Philadelphia Flyers
With Jeff Carter and Mike Richards ready to take on more responsibility, and Handzus not being used to his fullest capability on the wing, the Flyers take on a little more salary to acquire a natural winger that can play on either side. Offensively, Calder is smaller and shiftier, which is in line with Philadelphia's game plan to adapt to the new style of the NHL. Defensively, Calder is also quite responsible.

What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
Unhappy with the size of the salary awarded to Calder after arbitration, and looking to restore the size to the scoring lines that they lost in the trading of Mark Bell earlier this summer, the Blackhawks solved both problems. They shaved three-quarters of a million dollars off the payroll, and added 6-foot-5 center Handzus. He will bring leadership and checking ability, along with the talent to contribute upwards of 60 points.
