JOHANSSON TO FLORIDA

The Florida Panthers acquired defenseman Magnus Johansson from the Chicago Blackhawks for a seventh-round draft pick in 2009.

What does it give the Florida Panthers
The Panthers acquired the journeyman Swede mainly to help out the team's ravaged defense corps. He'll likely be used in the role Cory Murphy held (bottom-pairing defender and power-play point man) before the latter went down to injury. However, Johansson will probably be sent down to the AHL once a few of Florida's rearguards return to action.

What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
The 'Hawks gave Johansson a chance to showcase his offensive skills this year, but he quickly was displaced from the lineup in favor of younger talent. Therefore, Johansson didn't have much of an NHL future in the Windy City, so the club did well to get a late draft pick from a potentially very deep draft in '09.
