SALO HEADS TO COLORADO
The Colorado Avalanche acquired goaltender Tommy Salo and a sixth-round draft pick in 2005 from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for defenseman Tom Gilbert.
What does it give the Colorado Avalanche
Insurance, as well as the ability to cement David Aebischer in the role of No. 1 netminder and crush all Olaf Kolzig rumors for good. Salo is expensive and just passing through Colorado for the playoff drive. If Aebischer struggles, veteran Swede Salo will get the call at playoff time. However, don't expect that to happen, since Salo has struggled for two years now.
What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
Gilbert is a solid blueline prospect with some offensive upside to his game. He'll probably spend more time in the NCAA ranks but could emerge as Edmonton's long-sought answer to their power-play quarterback needs.
