RYAN SMYTH TO ISLES
The New York Islanders acquired left winger Ryan Smyth from the Edmonton Oilers for forward Robert Nilsson, center Ryan O'Marra and a first-round draft pick in 2007.
What does it give the New York Islanders
The Islanders have lacked a player with Smyth's leadership qualities, grit and scoring prowess for quite some time now. He'll instantly make them better, and more accountable on the ice. What rookie GM Garth Snow gave up was a huge return, but he is trying to show his fans he is serious about getting the Isles back into Cup contention. Look for Smyth to play a first-line role with the Isles, as well as log important minutes on the power play.
What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
Nilsson and O'Marra are two pieces of the puzzle for the future of the franchise, while the first rounder should soon join them in June. Unfortunately, it came at the expense of Smyth, who was the face of the Oilers franchise for several years. The decision to unload him must have been painful for Edmonton GM Kevin Lowe, but the return should appease fans--eventually.
