PENNER TO KINGS

The Los Angeles Kings acquired winger Dustin Penner from the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Colten Teubert, a first-round pick in the 2011 draft and a conditional third-round pick in the 2012 draft.

What does it give the Los Angeles Kings
Penner is perhaps the big move that L.A. needed up front, since the Kings paid a major premium to land him. Penner is a big body who can help the power play and provide top-six winger offense. Is it enough, though, to make a major Stanley Cup run in the Western Conference this spring? The jury is still out. Penner should line up next to top center Anze Kopitar, so his production should be on the rise. Also, he's familiar with Southern California, having played with the Anaheim Ducks, so the adjustment should be smooth. By giving up so much for Penner, however, the Kings are probably done.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
Teubert is a major coup for the Oil, since they truly lack talented defense prospects who can step into the lineup next season. Teubert should be able to do so, unless they decide to bring him up to the NHL right away. He's big, right-handed and filled with all-round upside. He's exactly what Edmonton needed. He's also a WHL grad, so staying out West should suit Teubert well. On top of Teubert, the Oilers land a first rounder this year and either a third or second rounder next year--depending on how far L.A. gets this spring. That's a huge return for a rebuilding franchise. Edmonton wanted to hit a home run as a seller, and a home run is exactly what they nailed.
