FLAMES TRADE FOR NILSON

The Calgary Flames acquired forward Marcus Nilson from the Florida Panthers for a second-round draft pick in 2004.

What does it give the Calgary Flames
Adding Nilson to the acquisition of Chris Simon over the weekend might mean the Flames are now done dealing. While Nilson has spent most of his NHL career as a winger, he may be tried as a center in Calgary--a team weakness. Either way, the 26-year-old Swede should give the Flames another two-way forward with shutdown ability. He may work well on a line with another recent Calgary acquisition--Ville Nieminen.

What does it give the Florida Panthers
While Nilson is a big loss in the Panthers dressing room, because of his never-say-quit attitude and leadership qualities, Florida has several two-way forwards ready to step up--namely Niklas Hagman and newcomer Christian Berglund. Therefore, adding a second-round pick is good value for Nilson.
