HUSELIUS TO CALGARY

The Calgary Flames acquired winger Kristian Huselius from the Florida Panthers for defenseman Steve Montador and forward Dustin Johner.

What does it give the Calgary Flames
The Flames are legitimate Cup contenders, but they are still lacking in the scoring department. That's where Huselius should fit right in, although he isn't a typical Darryl Sutter acquisition. With fellow Swede (and former Panthers teammate) Marcus Nilson around, Huselius could get acquainted with Western Canada in a hurry. He'll be asked to provide the Flames with another scoring forward, in order to take a little heat off captain Jarome Iginla. This is a low-risk/high-reward move by Sutter.

What does it give the Florida Panthers
In Montador, the Panthers add another solid defenseman to a team whose primary need is up front. Johner is a decent minor-league performer who may never amount to much at the NHL level. Clearly, GM Mike Keenan needed to rid himself of Huselius right away because he didn't get a lot in return. That said, the addition of Montador could lead to another move--since Florida now boasts 10 legitimate NHL defensemen (including injured Slovak Branislav Mezei and the recently-demoted Alexander Karpovtsev).
