BRYAN ALLEN TO CAROLINA
The Carolina Hurricanes acquired defenseman Bryan Allen from the Florida Panthers for left winger Sergei Samsonov.
What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes have good puck movers along the blueline, but Allen provides them with a classic defensive defender and shutdown guy. He's a big upgrade over Jay Harrison and Derek Joslin on the bottom pairing. Allen is also familiar with the Southeast conderence, so he should be able to adjust to Carolina rather quickly. Losing Samsonov, a potential UFA, shouldn't be a big deal for Carolina at this point--especially with the recent addition of Cory Stillman.
What does it give the Florida Panthers
This is a pure salary dump, as Allen had one more season left on his contract and Samsonov is on an expiring contract. GM Dale Tallon was clearly willing to accept whatever Carolina wanted to move another salary here. Florida has really stripped everything down in a big way this deadline, so perhaps the plan is to become extremely active on the July 1 unrestricted free agent market. For now, Tallon is doing his best to sell off as many assets as possible--no matter the return.
