CANUCKS TRADE FOR CHRIS HIGGINS

The Vancouver Canucks acquired forward Christopher Higgins from the Florida Panthers for defenseman Evan Oberg and a third-round pick in the 2013 draft.

What does it give the Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks were looking for a bottom-six forward, so Higgins' speed and versatility will help them on the penalty kill and as a checker. He's currently injured, but the Canucks can wait for him. If he returns to full strength before the playoffs, he also can fill in as a scorer--though he hasn't done much scoring in years. It's a decent gamble here, since Oberg is a small price to pay and the Canucks shouldn't be worrying about draft picks at this time.

What does it give the Florida Panthers
Higgins wasn't in the plans in South Florida, so adding another third rounder and a decent depth defenseman in Oberg is a good return for GM Dale Tallon. The rebuilding continues, and the accumulation of assets provides much to look forward to down the road. Higgins didn't do much while with the Panthers, and he was even injured at present time. Therefore, Tallon did well to get assets for him.
