GERBER TO CAROLINA

The Carolina Hurricanes acquired goaltender Martin Gerber from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for defenseman Tomas Malec and a third-round draft pick in 2004.

What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes
Shortly after dealing Arturs Irbe to Columbus, the 'Canes add Gerber from the Ducks for added goalkeeping depth. This either gives Carolina an excellent duo in the crease (along with Kevin Weekes), or sets up a third goaltending move involving Weekes--since the latter becomes a restricted free agent on July 1. Gerber was a sought after commodity, and may be ready to assume No. 1 goalie duties. Stay tuned.

What does it give the Anaheim Ducks
Malec gives Anaheim another strong defender for the future, to go along with Vitaly Vishnevski and Martin Skoula. The third-round pick heading to Anaheim is the 74th overall pick. Overall, the Ducks received good value for their backup netminder.
