POPOVIC FOR BRENNAN

The Atlanta Thrashers acquired defenseman Mark Popovic from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for left wing Kip Brennan.

What does it give the Atlanta Thrashers
In Popovic, the Thrashers add a young blueliner who could become a big part of the team's future. He'll likely start 2005-06 in the AHL, but should see action with the big club at some point this season. Popovic is the type of defenseman teams are not supposed to be able to acquire in exchange for an enforcer type, but that's exactly what Thrashers GM Don Waddell pulled off. Kudos to Atlanta.

What does it give the Anaheim Ducks
It's hard to understand what GM Brian Burke will do with his posse of newfound left-wing enforcers: Todd Fedoruk, Travis Moen and now Brennan. Obviously, Burke believes that the best way to sell the game of hockey is with goals and goons. Still, giving up on Popovic could turn out to be a big mistake down the road. As for Brennan, he's probably ticketed for the AHL.
