CANUCKS ADD CARNEY

The Vancouver Canucks acquired defenseman Keith Carney and the rights to defenseman Juha Alen from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for defenseman Brett Skinner and a second-round draft pick in 2006.

What does it give the Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks get significantly better at the back end with the addition of Carney, who has been a shutdown defender in the playoffs in the past. He adds quality insurance in case any of Ed Jovanovski, Matthias Ohlund or Sami Salo cannot return to full strength from their injuries. Carney, like Jovanovski, is a potential unrestricted free agent so his time in B.C. may be short.

What does it give the Anaheim Ducks
Obviously, nobody knows the Canucks prospect bank quite like Anaheim GM Brian Burke. Skinner was obviously a player Burke was very high on, and he's going to be a big part of the Ducks future along the blueline. The second rounder is also good value for a veteran blueliner who was going to become an unrestricted free agent. That said, the Ducks may not be able to leapfrog Vancouver now that Carney has moved to B.C.
