STRUGGLING OILERS LAND VETERAN ROY

The Edmonton Oilers acquired center Derek Roy from the Nashville Predators for center Mark Arcobello.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are desperate for help at the center position behind star {P Ryan Nugent-Hopkins}, so they are hoping 31-year-old Roy has something left in the tank. He struggled badly in Nashville this season, but to be fair he was playing out of position (wing) due to the Predators' depth down the middle. Look for Roy to play a second-line role in Edmonton. He's a short-term fix.

What does it give the Nashville Predators
By swapping the contract of Roy for Arcobello, the Preds save a little dough here. That's important for a team on a budget who is performing above expectations so far this season. Arcobello will likely serve a depth role with the Preds. He should feel a bit more comfortable playing wing--something Roy struggled with during his brief stay in Nashville. This was mostly a salary dump.

Fantasy impact
Roy's fantasy stock gets a significant boost here, as he's now back playing his natural center position (and for a club that desperately needs him). That said, Roy might not have much left to offer fantasy leaguers at this stage of his NHL career. As for Arcobello, he will now move into a depth role on the contending Preds. Therefore, what little fantasy value he had is gone.
