HABS RE-ACQUIRE MARA
The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Paul Mara from the Anaheim Ducks for a fifth-round draft pick in 2012.
What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens are a "system" club under coach Jacques Martin, so they like acquiring familiarity with said system. Enter Mara, who will help in the short term due to injuries to the likes of Jaroslav Spacek and Hal Gill--not to mention season-ending ailments to Andrei Markov and Josh Gorges. This probably means rookie Brendon Nash will head back to the AHL. Mara, who played for the Habs last season, is well liked and adds more leadership to their dressing room as well.
What does it give the Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks had nine NHL defensemen on their roster, following the acquisition of Francois Beauchemin recently, so it was obvious somebody had to be moved. Mara was seeing very little action lately, after beginning the season as a mentor to rookie rearguard Cam Fowler. Without Mara, the Ducks still have Andy Sutton and Sheldon Brookbank to step in if any of the top six blueliners go down. Landing a fifth rounder next year for a player no longer needed is called good asset management.
