BLUES ADD GOALIE DEPTH IN NILSSON
The St. Louis Blues acquired goaltender Anders Nilsson from the Edmonton Oilers for goaltender Niklas Lundstrom and a fifth-round draft pick in 2016.
What does it give the St. Louis Blues
The Blues were seeking goaltending insurance due to the recent injury to veteran Brian Elliott, who had been excellent in the crease area this season in place of the injured Jake Allen. Allen is back now, so Nilsson will merely provide depth at this point.
What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers recently re-signed Cam Talbot to a multi-year contract to serve as their No. 1 goalkeeper, so they felt Nilsson was expendable at this time. Lundstrom adds depth, while prospect Laurent Brossoit is expected to become the new Oilers' backup.
Fantasy impact
Nilsson's fantasy value has all but disappeared now that he's in St. Louis because he is the clear third-string netminder at this point. In fact, he is expected to spend time in the AHL to start his Blues career. Lundstrom is still a long way away from the NHL, while the clear winner after this transaction is Brossoit (a strong keeper-league option).
