IRBE TO COLUMBUS

The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired goaltender Arturs Irbe from the Carolina Hurricanes for future considerations.

What does it give the Columbus Blue Jackets
The Jackets needed to upgrade their backup goaltending situation, and Irbe should do just that. He'll provide better support for No. 1 man Marc Denis, and possibly even push Denis for playing time. Columbus also gets Irbe on the cheap, since they're only responsible for $675,000 of his $3.5 Million salary for 2004-05.

What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes
The 'Canes save a little money by moving Irbe and, at the same time, open a roster spot for either Patrick DesRochers or WHL grad Cam Ward. Expect the future considerations to be purely financial, with perhaps a very late round pick thrown into the mix.
