O'NEILL DEALT TO THE MAPLE LEAFS

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired winger Jeff O'Neill from the Carolina Hurricanes for a conditional draft pick in 2006.

What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs
The worst kept secret in hockey was that the Leafs were interested in O'Neill...and he was very interested in the Leafs. Will the combination be a perfect match? Perhaps, although O'Neill must overcome personal tragedy this season--which may not be easy in the fishbowl that is Toronto. It doesn't appear as though the conditional pick will be any higher than a third rounder, so GM John Ferguson Jr. did well in replacing Owen Nolan with O'Neill at minimal cost.

What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes may not have even qualified O'Neill this weekend, so receiving a fairly high draft pick in what is expected to be a great draft in 2006 is not the worst move GM Jim Rutherford could make. Now, he must find O'Neill's replacement, since he just dealt his most proven goal-scorer.
