SENS GET STILLMAN, COMMODORE

The Ottawa Senators acquired winger Cory Stillman and defenseman Mike Commodore from the Carolina Hurricanes for defenseman Joe Corvo and winger Patrick Eaves.

What does it give the Ottawa Senators
A top-line winger capable of playing with the big boys. A proven playoff performer, Stillman is currently in a month-long funk, but nothing snaps a guy out of a horrible slump like being plunked on a line with Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley. Ottawa has been dying to put a player other than Daniel Alfredsson with that twosome in order to spread out the offense--Patrick Eaves, Antoine Vermette, and Dean McAmmond have all been tried there numerous times. Now, Alfredsson can play with Mike Fisher and finally give the Sens a second wave of attack. Commodore is basically Corvo-lite. He has the ability to do everything that Corvo does, but to a lesser extent and with half the price tag. This move probably takes the team out of the Peter Forsberg and Marian Hossa rumors.

What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes
The 'Canes get a young, but somewhat injury-prone winger capable of being a solid second-line contributer one day. They also got that puck-moving defenseman that they have been craving--Corvo can expect to log a ton of time on the power play. The 30-year-old has been consistent offensively, following up a 40-point year with the Kings in 2006-07 with 37 points in Ottawa last season. He is currently on pace for 41 points, but that total could grow with the added responsibility.
