CANUCKS ADD DEPTH ON DEFENSE

The Vancouver Canucks acquired defenseman Andrew Alberts from the Carolina Hurricanes for a third-round draft pick in 2010.

What does it give the Vancouver Canucks
Alberts is a big, bruising stay-at-home type of rearguard and will bring solid veteran punch to an already-strong Canucks blueline corps. His toughness will be especially key in the playoffs, and Alberts doesn't cost a lot salary-wise so all-in-all this is a solid minor addition for Vancouver (albeit one that cost a quality draft pick).

What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes
Carolina is in 'sell' mode due to their disappointing season and while Alberts is not a big salary hit, he was on the books for next season as well as this one. Carolina drops a little salary here, frees up a little cap space, and adds a pretty nice pick in return for a non-core player.
