BLUESHIRTS LAND AVERY

The New York Rangers acquired forward Sean Avery and winger John Seymour from the Los Angeles Kings for forwards Jason Ward, Marc-Andre Cliche and Jan Marek.

What does it give the New York Rangers
Avery, 26, has a reputation as an agitating, outspoken player with a league penalty minute crown under his belt. His forte is getting under the other team's skin. He does the job so well that at times, he can get under his own team's skin. Not afraid to speak his mind, Avery is one of the most colorful players in the league. He also chips in some decent offense and could fit in nicely in a second- or third-line role. Seymour is a 19-year-old left winger who knows how to use the body, but needs to fill out his lanky 6-foot-3 frame with limited offensive potential.

What does it give the Los Angeles Kings
Ward is a fourth-line role player who showed offensive talent in the AHL, but never carried through to the NHL. The heart of this deal is Cliche, who played for Team Canada's gold medal-winning entry at the 2007 WJC, was a second-round draft pick of the Rangers in 2005. Playing for Lewiston of the Quebec League, he has 36 points in 35 games this season. Marek leads his Russian League team in scoring this year, but has shown hesitation to come over to North America. If the Kings ever get him across the pond, he does have some potential as a second- or third-line player.
