HOSSA TO THE RANGERS

The New York Rangers acquired winger Marcel Hossa from the Montreal Canadiens for forward Garth Murray.

What does it give the New York Rangers
An excellent acquisition for the Rangers, who need all the young talent they can muster. Murray had already been sent down to the AHL, so adding Hossa to the current roster is a coup. There's a chance Hossa may find himself on a scoring line right away on Broadway.

What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
Clearly, somebody had to be moved from the Canadiens forward ranks, but GM Bob Gainey didn't get the defenseman he needs in exchange for Hossa. Moreover, Murray doesn't equal Hossa value-wise, so this trade does nothing to help the Habs--except open up roster space for rookies Chris Higgins, Tomas Plekanec, Alexander Perezhogin and Guillaume Latendresse.
