ZEDNIK TO WASHINGTON

The Washington Capitals acquired winger Richard Zednik from the Montreal Canadiens for a third-round draft pick in 2007.

What does it give the Washington Capitals
Washington needs goal-scorers, so bringing Zednik back to D.C. makes sense. Furthermore, he's a left-handed shot whose best position is right wing, which is what the Capitals needed. He'll probably play on the second line opposite Russian left wing Alexander Semin, who is also returning to the team this season.

What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
After acquiring Mike Johnson from Phoenix in a separate deal, the Canadiens had no more use for Zednik. Therefore, they did well to upgrade the draft pick from a fourth--surrendered in exchange for Johnson--to a third for Zednik. The Slovakian winger underachieved in Montreal, and wanted out.
