GRABOVSKI TO THE LEAFS
The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired center Mikhail Grabovski from the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Greg Pateryn and a second-round draft pick in 2010.
What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs
The 24-year-old Grabovski fell out of favor with Canadiens management, but he has a lot of offensive potential. He was rumored to be part of the package Montreal would have sent to Toronto if the Habs had signed Mats Sundin. The Leafs got their man anyway, though it's curious that they decided to trade a 2008 draft pick two weeks after selecting Pateryn.
What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
Grabovski wanted guaranteed ice time in Montreal, something that he couldn't receive. Therefore, the Habs did him a favor by sending him to Toronto. Montreal receives two future assets in Pateryn and a second in 2010, so the end result of this trade won't be known for quite some time. It's interesting to note that the Habs and Leafs are making deals at present time, though not surprising considering the relationship between general managers Bob Gainey (Montreal) and Cliff Fletcher (Toronto) over the years.
