TRADE VOIDED by NHL (Feb. 22, '07)
The San Jose Sharks acquired winger Alexander Korolyuk from the New Jersey Devils for a third-round draft pick in 2007.
What does it give the San Jose Sharks
The Sharks have always liked Korolyuk, but have had trouble getting him signed and happy. According to an arbitrator's ruling, Korolyuk still owes the NHL team that owns his rights one season, so there's a chance he might wind up back in San Jose before the end of the 2006-07 campaign. The Sharks acquired a first rounder from New Jersey when they first dealt Korolyuk, and now give up a third rounder to get him back. A nice move by Sharks GM Doug Wilson.
What does it give the New Jersey Devils
The Devils originally acquired Korolyuk from the Sharks when they dealt the rights to retired defenseman Vladimir Malakhov in order to clear salary-cap space. Now, they decided that Korolyuk wasn't worth bringing over. So, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello made the best of a bad situation by getting a third rounder back. He made a major mistake when he gave Malakhov a hefty contract, but has done a nice job of escaping salary-cap purgatory.
