PECA TO EDMONTON

The Edmonton Oilers acquired center Michael Peca from the New York Islanders for center Mike York and a conditional draft pick in 2006.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
It's starting to look like the Edmonton Oilers of old, as yet another big-name player gets to wear the Oil drop. Peca is not the No. 1 center GM Kevin Lowe was looking for, but he is an ideal two-way pivot with leadership skills. He'll play a lot in all game situations and will help the Oilers tremendously on the penalty kill. This move, coupled with the acquisition of Pronger, gets Edmonton a little bit closer to a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

What does it give the New York Islanders
The Islanders needed to make salary-cap room, especially after the acquisition of Miroslav Satan. Therefore, Peca was the logical player to go--since Alexei Yashin is virtually untradeable because of his gaudy salary. York should slide into Peca's old role as the No. 2 center and could even outproduce his counterpart in 2005-06. However, York won't be able to replace Peca completely.
