ROURKE TO EDMONTON

The Edmonton Oilers acquired defenseman Allan Rourke and a third-round draft pick in 2008 from the New York Islanders for a second-round draft pick in 2008.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
If this doesn't prove how desperate Oilers GM Kevin Lowe is for defense, nothing will. Rourke is serviceable for depth purposes, but he's not the type of player that usually leads teams to downgrade their draft position. Perhaps Lowe knows something about Rourke that nobody else does. Otherwise, it's a panic move.

What does it give the New York Islanders
A great move by Islanders GM Garth Snow, as he moves into the second round in what is expected to be a deep '08 draft. This gives Snow two picks in Round 2 next year. All this for an expendable rearguard in Rourke, who would have been a No. 7 or 8 blueliner had he remained on Long Island.
