COMRIE AND CAMPOLI TO SENS
The Ottawa Senators acquired forward Mike Comrie and defenseman Chris Campoli from the New York Islanders for forward Dean McAmmond and a first-round draft pick in 2009.
What does it give the Ottawa Senators
The Senators were expected to be sellers, and they still may be, but this move was designed to provide one last-ditch effort to get them back into the playoff mix in the Eastern Conference. Comrie may stay with the Sens this time, after spening time with the club in 2006-07. However, he is a potential UFA. Campoli may wind up being the key to the trade, since he is the type of puck-moving blueliner the Senators have been seeking. This also suggests Filip Kuba's days in Ottawa should be numbered.
What does it give the New York Islanders
The Islanders did very well to add a second first rounder to their 2009 draft board. The pick was originally San Jose's, so it is more like an early second rounder than a first but it's still a very good return for the rebuilding Isles. McAmmond was basically a salary dump. He will play out the string with the worst team in the NHL and then likely be on the move again. Kudos to Isles GM Garth Snow on this one.
