The New York Rangers acquired defenseman Jyri Niemi from the New York Islanders for a sixth-round draft pick in 2010.

It's not every day the two New York clubs make a swap. This is the first in 37 years, in fact. Niemi will add a little organizational depth on the Rangers' blue-line. However, he's a long shot. Clearly, they liked him more than Islanders management did.
What does it give the New York Islanders
The Islanders were on the verge of losing Niemi's rights, since he needed to be signed by June 1 or wind up back in the entry draft. Instead, the Isles receive a late pick for his rights. Niemi was originally a third rounder, but he wasn't panning out.
