OILERS-RANGERS SWAP

The Edmonton Oilers acquired center Petr Nedved and goaltender Jussi Markkanen from the New York Rangers for forward Dwight Helminen, goaltender Stephen Valiquette and a second-round draft pick in 2004.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers add two key elements for a late-season push for a playoff spot. Nedved gives the club a legitimate scoring center. He'll probably be reunited with right wing Radek Dvorak, and should feel comfortable in returning to the Western Conference. Meanwhile, Markkanen was brought back to the Oilers to push starter Tommy Salo, who continues to struggle with Edmonton. Don't be surprised if the Oil rides Markkanen down the stretch.

What does it give the New York Rangers
By dealing Nedved, the Rangers should finally give Jamie Lundmark ample ice time at the center position. Furthermore, Helminen is a decent forward prospect with one more year of NCAA eligibility at Michigan. The Blueshirts also add another valuable high draft pick to further advance the rebuilding process. Valiquette is merely AHL fodder at this point.
