AVALANCHE ACQUIRE BARNABY

The Colorado Avalanche acquired winger Matthew Barnaby and a third-round draft pick in 2004 from the New York Rangers for defensemen Chris McAllister and David Liffiton, as well as a second-round draft pick in 2004.

What does it give the Colorado Avalanche
Barnaby should be a quality third-line winger for the Avs, and may even move into a top-six role if Teemu Selanne's struggles in Colorado continue. He adds plenty of agitating qualities that are certain to help the Avs down the stretch. In giving up Liffiton, Colorado dealt from their main organizational strength--defense.

What does it give the New York Rangers
The Rangers add a decent defensive defenseman for the future in Liffiton, and another quality draft pick for the 2004 draft. McAllister is mainly a warm body to finish off the 2003-04 season, and a potential reserve enforcer for the squad next season.
