De VRIES TO OTTAWA

The Ottawa Senators acquired defenseman Greg de Vries from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Karel Rachunek and center Alexandre Giroux.

What does it give the Ottawa Senators
It doesn't give them a goaltender but it may give either Patrick Lalime or Martin Prusek more of a comfort zone between the pipes. De Vries will be used in shutdown situations by coach Jacques Martin, and will probably be paired with Wade Redden.

What does it give the New York Rangers
Rachunek is a sound defender who recently lost his confidence with the Sens. At 24, he'll probably be a big part of the Blueshirts' rebuilding plan. Giroux had no future in Ottawa, mainly because of the team's incredible depth up front, but should become a regular in New York City. He can play center or left wing, and possesses decent all-around potential.
